Amichai Ben Shalev (Spanish: Amijai) is a composer, bandoneonist, and educator known for his dynamic range and versatility. His career spans solo classical performances, orchestral works, contemporary tango, world music, and even progressive metal. Highlights of his career include the premiere of his composition "Détour" for Symphonic Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble at the Maison Symphonique of Montreal.
Shalev holds a master's degree in composition from the University of Montreal and is currently pursuing his doctorate. He studied bandoneon at the Buenos Aires Conservatory under Rodolfo Daluisio.
He is a member of the trio Les Arrivants, awarded the Prix Opus for Album of the Year 2024 in the world music category. Beyond performance, Shalev is dedicated to music education, having taught at institutions like the Buenos Aires Music Conservatory 'Manuel de Falla' and conducted masterclasses worldwide, including at the Canadian Music Centre in Toronto and the University of Berlin. He is also the creator of Bandoneon TV, a YouTube channel dedicated to bandoneon studies, aimed at nurturing the next generation of bandoneonists.
Born to a secular Jewish family with an Argentinian mother, Amichai Ben Shalev was raised in Israel, lived in Buenos Aires, and currently resides in Montreal.
